Ginger Explains How to Create a Spray

I thought I would share this info because people were interested in nowing how to make their own spray. There are 2 methods that I have found and have used both. Both are pretty simple.

Simple monocolor image (Works in all Mods):

Eg. Rico's Foo Foo Bunny from hell.

  1. Create a new image, 64 x 64 pixels in size, at a resolution of 72 pixels/inch. Create it in 24-bit colour as the end results look better. Tip: white is opaque, black is transparent and Greys will be translucent.
  2. Convert the image to 8-bit grey scale.
  3. Save your file as a .bmp in your Half-Life\logos folder.
  4. You will now be able to access it through your MULTIPLAYER - CUSTOMIZE menu. Select the color you want for your spray.

now if you want to get fancy......

Creating a color spray (Directions for CS only):

Eg. My Ginger logo with target on chest.

WARNING: Once you have created this spray and install it, do not try to view or select it through the MULTIPLAYER - CUSTOMIZE menu. You will end up overwriting it and you will have to do it all over again. Best thing to do is backup the original pldecal.wad file in a safe place after it is created and before you install it.

  1. Create your image using your choice of graphics software. (I used coreldraw and corel photopaint) Photoshop works really well.
  2. Image rules are:
    1. your dimensions must be in multiples of 16 (i.e 96,112,128,144,160,176 etc). Mine is 112 x 96.
    2. the Width multiplied by the Length must be less than 10752. Most servers will reject your spray if it is over this size.
    3. save it as a bmp or jpg. I think png will work as well.
    4. Blue (pure blue) is transparent.
  3. Download the Half-Life texturing tool 'Wally' and install it. Wally is available here.
  4. Open wally and click 'Wizard' then 'HL Color Decal'
    1. Enter or browse to your HL folder, usually C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\.
    2. Enter cstrike the Mod.
    3. Select 'File on Hard drive' and browse to your image.
    4. Click OK and the conversion will take place. A pldecal.WAD file will be
      created.
  5. Click File then Save. Wally will automatically save the pldecal.WAD into your main cstrike directory. CS will read it and automatically use it as your spray.
  6. Make a backup of the pldecal.wad file just in case you mistakingly go
into the MULTIPLAYER CUSTOMIZE menu option. Like I said at the top, it will
    automatically overwrite your wad file.

Now play and spray.

Hope this helps,
